Alice “Lorraine” Shirk, 98, passed away January 2, 2020, in Des Moines, IA. Services will be held at 2 pm Friday, January 24, 2020 at Westover Funeral Home. A private burial will take place prior to the service.
Lorraine was born June 29, 1921 in Rolfe, IA to Victor and Marie (Jones) Shimon. She married Donald R. Shirk on October 24, 1943. Their honeymoon trip was a long train ride to Savannah, GA where they sat on benches and ate bread and butter sandwiches.
In her school years, Lorraine excelled as a clarinetist winning competitions across Iowa with her high school band. At ISU her artistic talents produced fashion and houseware designs. These were talents she would pass onto her son, David. Before marriage she worked at the Iowa State Tax Commission. After marriage, she became a consummate homemaker, wife and mother. As a couple they were often referred to as Ward and June Cleaver.
Lorraine was best known for her culinary skills as well as her skills as a seamstress and a knitter with baby booties being her favorite. However, her greatest joy and satisfaction came from her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and grand dogs.
Lorraine’s ability to draw people in with her smile, caring nature and sense of humor lasted until her death at Calvin Community. There she made new friends among the residents, nurse aides, nurses, food and administrative staff. For the exceptional and compassionate care she received, her family is eternally grateful.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Julia (John Rupp) Shirk of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, Catherine (Kyle) Reid of Orlando, FL; Steven (Jessica) Shirk of Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren, Oliver and Alo Reid of Orlando, FL and Hailey Shirk of Minneapolis, MN.
